Leprosy in India

Leprosy currently affects approximately a quarter of a million people throughout the world, with 70% of these cases occurring in India.
Traditionally, India holds the unenviable position of the origin of leprosy. The disease is thought to have then spread, via trade and war, to China, Egypt, and the Middle East, and later to Europe and the Americas. From antiquity to modernity, Indian society treated leprosy singularly with respect to custom and law, a response shaped by both scientific knowledge and cultural attitudes. India's future challenges in leprosy control include multiple systems of medicine, stigma, and educational knowledge gaps. Our mission is to help the Leprosy colonies become thriving, self-sufficient communities by educating the colony children in a safe, healthy environment, providing leprosy patients with their own small businesses using micro-finance, and addressing the unique health challenges of the colonies with mobile medical units staffed by volunteers.
Ascend Alliance in cooperation with Rising Star Outreach offers you an oprutunity to directly help those afflicted with leprosy by participating in a humatarian expedition to a leper colony in India. Please click to view current expeditions and to register!
You can also donate to Ascend Alliance to support our crusade against leprosy today.
