Chiapas is considered the “Forgotten State” of Mexico. Isolated villages are scattered in the highlands and jungles; malnutrition and illiteracy are endemic; the illiteracy rate is three times higher than Mexico’s national average. Yet its tropical climate, natural beauty, and abundant natural resources have been utilized for the development and benefit of the rest of the country. Ironically, the majority of the Chiapas’ population has not benefitted.
Ascend has focused its efforts on coordinating with impoverished communities and local governments to discuss limited assets and identify appropriate gaps that Ascend can then help the communities fill. Education was identified as top priority, particularly school construction.
